Make Me Your Monster - Single by Christopher Penney on Apple Music
Hi there. Thanks for reading and listening. After rehab (a long story for another time!) I found myself alone, in lockdown, in my fifties, with just a piano for company. I began writing music as a way to face the demons and connect the dots.
Years ago I quit a successful acting career to pursue a "normal" life with a steady job. And I mostly hated it. I survived by medicating myself. Not a strategy I'd recommend! But my love of music and performing has never left me, and I'm finding my way back to that.
I grew up listening to artists like Kate Bush, Bowie, Annie Lennox, Queen and Elton John, and my music always has an element of theatre, with a focus on character and story. I'll write about everything and anything from narcissism, identity, love and co-dependency to Alzheimer's, aging, and body image.
I hated piano lessons as a child. I wasn't very good. Small hands and no natural ability. But I love playing the piano now, for my own enjoyment and escape. I finally feel free to create, and use it as a tool to tell stories. I aim to capture sincerity, honesty and a bit of drama in my music, and I'll confess to a certain enjoyment in dysfunction, walking a line between humour and tragedy. I'm just as likely to write a straight-up country ballad as a musical theatre number or an experimental piece.
My music doesn't fit neatly into any one genre. I don't know where I belong in the music "industry" and frankly, I'm ok with that!
Not belonging is where I belong.
Join us at the Eagle Inn, Salford, on 27th July 2023 where I'll be a guest at John Jenkin's Tuebrook Album launch. I'll be performing my new single Make Me Your Monster.
